Bartholomew Gosnold the English explorer and colonizer, sailed for the new world in 1602 and eventually landed on the coast of maine. He then worked his way south o an island near cape cod which he called Elizabeth, where he landed and built a fort. From his story, Bierstadt fashioned a remarkable oil painting, considering that it was completed a little lover a year after he returned from Europe. In it, he records his direct response to a shoreside scene , an utterly peaceful moment on a summer day a high noon.

When Albert Bierstadt lived in Dusseldorf , Albert Bierstadt made exended sketching trips. From his studies, he created several intimate landscape oil paintings. In these oil paintings , a house, a barn, or a mill was placed in the middle distance, often near a pond or a brook. Rather than emphasize particular activities or suggest and anecdote, Albert Bierstadt prefered to concerntrate on general settings or typical scenes. This suggests that in the early stage of his art career , Albert Bierstadt had already been more interested in landscape than gener. Although the mill is in the central of " a rustic mill", it also could be considered as a decorative accessory. A touch of the indians Bierstadt used as scenic additions in later works.

While preparing the study of Albert Bierstadt oil paintings, i kept seperate the three units of the text--- the chronology, the essay and the discussion of the plates. Althought some repetition was necessary, each is a disinct entity and should be read in sequence to obtain a rounded picture of the artist. In the last unit, i considerboth stylistic and iconographic matters according to the nature of the work under discussion but without following an particular scheme. Despite Bierstadt's popularity and the general diffusion of knowledge concerning his works. This is the first exentsive consideration of his style.Surprisingly, many of Albert bierstadts's paintings, even major works, ar still not accurately dated. Since such a task was beyond the scope of this blog. I have generally followed the dates given elsewhere. I do however suggest interpretations of several works and aspects of bierstadts's career that reach well beyond those offered by the authors of the two principal sources of inforamtion about Albert Bierstadt.
